Fawlty Towers The Builders (1 of 3)

January 14, 2009 – 12:09 pm

Fawlty Towers is a British sitcom made by the BBC and first broadcast on BBC2 in 1975. Only twelve episodes were ever produced, but the series
has had a lasting and powerful influence on later shows.

The show is set in a fictional hotel Fawlty Towers in the Devon town of Torquay on the “English Riviera”. The series was written by John Cleese and Connie Booth, both of whom played main characters, and was broadcast in two series: the first, in 1975, was produced and directed by John Howard Davies, and the second, in 1979, was produced by Douglas Argent and directed by Bob Spiers.

In a list of the 100 Greatest British Television Programmes drawn up by the British Film Institute in 2000, voted for by industry professionals, Fawlty Towers was placed first.[1] It was also voted fifth in the BBC’s “Britain’s Best Sitcom” poll in 2004

  3. For God’s sake, all white/black Americans are 1st,2nd,3rd,4th generation ‘foreigners’.What relevance has Gervais’s parentage?? He’s an English Southerner. He grew up there. According to your reasoning, Bob Hope was an Englishman rather than an American, and Mel Brookes was half Russian and half Austrian.America finds it difficult to laugh at itself, which is a shame because there are so many crazy, far out elements to its culture: guns, bible belt etc. This detracts from the comedy value of its shows.

  4. Well you rest your case, because I don’t agree with it.The list given by radionorwi is pretty conclusive. Ther’re lots of Brit classics that have longevity. Not many US comedies can claim that. The reason that US comedies such as Friends (which is such a poor example of ‘good’ comedy) are successful is because the US media houses/studios have the money to publicise and sell the features. Not because they are funnier. Modern British comedies such as the Office are very successful abroad anyway.
