  6. @patrick112590 Quite right, quite right. And right again – I would certainly agree that Stephen was indulging in a bit of hyperbole there.

  7. @guysmiley00 I realize that. But there are also a great number of people who see the beauty and morality of science, and embrace it completely. I was just making a minor comment about Stephen using the word “always.” It makes it sound as if scientists are always outsiders.

  8. @stperkin From my extremely-scanty research on the subject, there appears to be a question as to whether the concept of Hitler’s vegetarianism was merely a part of the image Bormann was trying to create for Hitler as disciplined, self-sacrificing champion of Germany who forswore personal pleasures (alcohol, meat, smoking, women, etc.). While Hitler seems to have been supportive of vegetarianism as a method of maximizing food production, it’s unclear as to whether he practiced it himself.

  9. @ohcrapmynameistoolon I think they’re using it in the dietary sense here, in that the gladiators didn’t appear to eat any animal products. You are correct that many modern “vegans” extend the concept to include the use of any animal products in any capacity.

  10. @patrick112590 Try talking to some of the fundamentalist nutters over in the US. To them, a failure to recognize a vengeful God who will mete out punishment in the afterlife invariably leads to behaviour destructive to both self and society. They seem completely unable to fathom that a person might act virtuously out of compassion rather than a fear of an all-seeing deity. Any attempt to challenge their dogma is seen as an “arrogant” affront to God.

  11. Stephen Fry would LOVE a Twitter for the dead. “Just had lunch with Ghandi. Later, disco dancing with Aristotle.”

By Lexclamation on Aug 21, 2010

  12. Seemingly trustworthy sources tell me Hitler was indeed a vegetarian. Many personal accounts of Hitler’s dinner guests say he would not eat meat. What’s up Fry?

  13. Russell Crowe is actually a New Zealander :)

  14. To be honest, I don’t know where Stephen gets the idea that scientists are “always being called arrogant”…

    By patrick112590 on Aug 21, 2010

  15. @ohcrapmynameistoolon it wasnt because of ethics that they were vegans, gladiators were slaves and meat is expensive. plus thats a film about gladiators, not an actual gladiator.

By issystardust on Aug 21, 2010

  16. Am i misinformed of the word Vegan? I thought it was no products of animals whatsoever. Yet they show a picture of a gladiator in leather armor…

  21. ‘The Scallywags’ needs to be an ‘ Inglorious Basterds’ style warped war movie. I think the Nazis planned to creat a main hub in Burnley in the north of england if they invaded.

Some one needs to fund this !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. ghost boxing i wonder what that sounds in the song ghostbusters.

By TheMischievousbull on Aug 21, 2010

  23. Interestingly, Michael Foot passed away recently. In the Daily Mail article, it noted that Foot was indeed a “scallywag” despite the fact he was a pacifist and refused to fight in the war.

  24. But truly, we just don’t KNOW in so many things…

But science still gives better theories about relationships within the physical world than any religion – with the deist concept of absolute truth.

  25. Can anyone tell me what the phrase ‘double mind jedi’ means?
I looked it up but couldn’t find anything.

By DottyDotDitto on Aug 21, 2010

  26. Yup, I agree! Every question creates 10 more, but that’s half the fun right! ;)
    XOXO
